         Linux is a computer operating system, created by a college student named Linus Torvalds,  in 1991.

The operating system is based of Minix which is a small UNIX system. Linus wanted to create a new

system that would exceed the minix standards. The first version of Linux was 0.02 which worked steadily

until 1994. The latest version of Linux is 2.6 and was released in December 2003. Linux allows different

companies to modify and change the system to fit different needs. A distribution of Linux is one of the

special created systems that are  made to accommodate different needs for different companies.

There are thousands of distributions that can be found in many different languages and used for many

different purposes. Two specific distributions of Linux are Debian Linux and Gentoo Linux. These are

available for online download. Star office is an application found on Linux and many people who use it

find that it is more enjoyable to use than Microsoft office or similar programs. Applixware is another

word processor used on Linux platforms, many people enjoy these programs because of their efficiency

as well as low cost. Suing Linux has its advantages above using Windows. Linux can be customized

solely to benefit the user and make a companies work much easier and time efficient. Linux and Linux

applications can be obtained for only a fraction of the cost it would take to buy Microsoft OS and

programs. Windows has an advantage with a bigger selection of programs and applications than Linux

offers.
